How SpacePlace is different
While there are existing solutions available (such as Edmodo, Moodle, Haiku) that include collaborative tools, SpacePlace is built for dynamic collaboration. Features such as OurCal, and Do My Part help create a structure that allows students to understand the role that their work plays in the accomplishment of group goals.
In addition to providing a space for students to work collaboratively, SpacePlace will also provide the ability for the teacher to track each student's digital contribution and a method to assess and track the group interactions in the classroom. These assessments can be used to reconfigure groups, to give students opportunities to develop skills in multiple group roles (coordinator, information seeker, spokesperson, etc), as well as allowing for the teacher to make appropriate interventions for struggling students.
By tracking both the physical and social artifacts of group work and providing that metric to students, SpacePlace will help students to see all the components of successful teams.
SpacePlace is a safe, COPPA compliant space. Access permissions will be in place to protect young students and their work. Teachers will be able share completed projects to just the classroom, grade, or school. They will also be able to to give parents access to see completed group projects or only the work that their student contributed.
